Planning to visit Hanoi at the end of the year? Pack a winter jacket—Hanoi experiences winter, and it can get chilly. The temperature starts to drop around late November.

I didn’t know this when I first visited in December. If I had done more research, I would’ve packed a warmer jacket. I was freezing.

In this article, I’ll share what winter in Hanoi is really like and how to dress for the season. You may check when is the best time to visit Vietnam

Winter Weather in Hanoi, Vietnam

Winter in Hanoi runs from December to late February, with temperatures dropping below 170°C—and sometimes even dipping below 10°C. January tends to be the coldest month.

Though these temperatures might be bearable for those used to colder climates, dressing appropriately remains essential. Layering works best during this time.

Hanoi sees very little rain in December

December sees little rain compared to January and February, but it’s still a good idea to pack an umbrella or raincoat. If you forget, you can easily buy one in Hanoi, where plenty of shops sell The fake North Face raincoats in a very reasonable price.

When I visited Hanoi and northern Vietnam during winter, I immediately noticed the overcast skies. The bad air pollution definitely cases to that gloomy atmosphere, and I wasn’t a fan. January to February experience cold winter days in Hanoi and across northern Vietnam with Sapa and Ha Giang with ice cold covering the surfaces.

Windy days and colder nights

The wind can really pick up during winter. It’s best to bring a windbreaker with you, even if you’re not riding a motorbike or bicycle. A beanie or scarf will help keep you warm and protect your hair from the wind. The combination of strong winds and high humidity can make Hanoi’s winter feel even colder.

What To Wear for Hanoi Winter

In winter in Hanoi, wear layered clothing, including a warm, waterproof coat, sweaters, thick pants like jeans, wool socks, gloves (if you plan to ride a motorbike). The weather can get quite cold, especially in the up north and Hanoi. Also, I recommend you to pack a comfy boots.

Pack Warm & Comfortable Base Layers

The first layer should fit well—not too tight—and feel comfortable. I prefer wool base layer, they are warm, soft on the skin, and versatile enough to wear on its own.

Camisoles also work well, such as the Icebreaker Women’s Merino Siren Cami Singlet or the Uniqlo HEATTECH Camisole. You’ll find many affordable options online. Personally, I like padded camisoles, like the Amazon Essentials Women’s Slim-Fit Camisole, as it saves space by eliminating the need for a bra.

For added warmth, pack a long-sleeved breathable base layer to pair with shirts, t-shirts, hoodies, or dresses.

Pack Thick, Warm Tops

Cotton isn’t the ideal fabric for winter, but a thick cotton hoodie can still keep you warm during Hanoi’s winter. I suggest choosing a cotton blend, like cotton mixed with polyester. Polyester dries quickly and repels water, though it isn’t very breathable. A cotton blend hoodie gives you the benefits of both fabrics.

I typically avoid cotton in cold weather and stick to merino wool or high-quality synthetic materials. But if I do pack cotton for winter trips, I always make sure to have a breathable base layer and a good outer layer.

Keep Your Feet and Legs Covered

Avoid leaving your legs not covered, especially if you’re not used to the cold. I’ve seen some tourist rocking mini shorts in winter, and it always amazed me, but it’s better not to follow suit. Plus, you probably don’t want to stand out, as Hanoi locals typically don’t dress that way in the winter.

Opt for thick trousers and breathable socks. If your trousers aren’t warm enough, you can layer leggings or thermal bottoms underneath. Planning to wear shorts, mini skirts, or dresses? Pair them with stockings. Black or skin-tone stockings or pantyhose not only look great but also keep you warm.

Pack Good Jackets

Although Hanoi’s winter temperatures aren’t extremely low, the high humidity can make it feel much colder.

If you plan to visit other parts of Northern Vietnam after Hanoi (Sapa or Ha Giang), pack both a winter jacket and a rain jacket. Other regions will see varying degrees of rain, so being prepared is smart. A rain jacket can also offer extra warmth, especially if you’re hiking in the mountains around Hanoi, where it can get quite chilly.

Look for packable jackets that suit Hanoi’s winter. Many shops in the city sell winter jackets from brands like The North Face. Since Hanoi’s winter isn’t too harsh, you don’t need a heavy-duty jacket, though you may spot locals in puffer jackets with furry hoods. Choose packable jackets, like Uniqlo’s Ultra Light Down Jacket, which will usually keep you warm enough for Hanoi’s winter. Alternatively, you can wear a coat, as many locals do during the season.

Put On Comfortable Shoes

Even though Hanoi doesn’t see much rain in December, always choose comfortable shoes, ideally ones that cover your feet completely, like boots. Regular walking or running shoes work well too. If your feet are sensitive to the cold, opt for ankle boots. If you only have regular walking shoes, add wool insoles to provide extra warmth. Otherwise, pack a pair of thick, moisture-wicking long socks.

Pack Winter scarves

Essential winter accessories include scarves, gloves, and hats. Pack a long or large scarf to cover your neck and head just to cover them well since there is an occasional wind in Hanoi during the months of December and January. Pick a fabric you prefer; it doesn’t have to be wool. Many locals wear beanies or berets, so you’ll find plenty of those for sale around Hanoi.
